Skin Brightening

Our natural skin tone is genetically determined by the kind and amount of melanin we produce in our skin. However, with regular sun exposure, aging, environmental insults and our skin care routine, our skin tone can deteriorate over time. Multiple treatments are available for skin brightening. You should start with (if you are not already using) a regular skincare regimen consisting of a sunscreen, gentle cleanser and moisturizer to maintain your skin quality. If your skin has darkened, you can use lightening products like glycolic acid, kojic acid, Vitamin C, arbutin etc in your skincare regimen. These ingredients decrease melanin production and clears the skin. Next step is going for procedures like chemical peels with alpha or beta hydroxy acids, trichloroacetic acid etc to cause exfoliation and brighten the skin. Laser treatments like Nd:YAG laser can also break down excess melanin in the skin and lighten skin tone. Glutathione injections, tablets and topical preparation are very much popular nowadays due to the antioxidant nature of glutathione which can lighten skin tone when used. However, long term safety data is not available for glutathione yet. Consult a dermatologist for deciding which treatment would be best suited for your skin.
